Bryan is once again considering selling the Travis B. Bryan Municipal Golf Course. This idea has been tossed around for years since the property is so valuable for people looking to develop new realty. Bryan has been unsuccessful at selling the course because of the strong resistance of consistent players.
This time is different. Bryan is now thinking about purchasing the financially troubled Briarcrest Country Club. They would turn Briarcrest in to a public golf course instead of a private one. A Bryan city official has already confirmed that the city has made two offers to the owners of the Country Club. The two offers were rejected by the owners. Bryan is looking for public opinion on whether to purchase the country club or not. They may turn to the polls to survey citizens.
In November, the Bryan city council will have two different referendums on the card. One is vote to see whether the city wants to sell the Municipal Golf Course. It is apart of the public park system and cannot be sold unless the voters approve the sale. The second issue on the ballot would just be fore public opinion. The issue would ask if residents want the city to buy the Briarcrest Country Club.
Membership has been falling at Briarcrest. This is because of the major competition in the area including three other privately owned Golf Courses. Certain amenities are included with the Briarcrest course, including tennis courts, a swimming pool, and clubhouse.
The value of the property, according to the Brazos County Appraisal District, lists the value of the real estate at approximately 2 million dollars. Bryan city officials have not said how much they offered for the land and buildings.
